Challenges are special competitive events that function differently from standard Ladder (Ranked) matches. They are effectively "mini-tournaments" that run on weekends or during special events.

Here is the breakdown of how they work:

### 1. The Core Rules (12 Wins / 3 Losses)

Most challenges operate on a "Gauntlet" system.

* **The Goal:** You try to reach 12 wins to complete the challenge and get the grand prize.
* **The Limit:** You are eliminated if you suffer 3 losses before reaching the 12th win.
* **Payout:** You receive rewards based on how far you got. A player who hits 11 wins gets significantly better loot than someone who only got 2 wins.

### 2. "Auto-Level" (Fair Play Mode)

The most important feature of Challenges is that they usually activate Auto-Level rules.

* **Stat Caps:** To make the fight about skill rather than money, the game caps all character levels (e.g., all Warriors are set to Level 9, all Talents are disabled or maximized).
* **Why this matters:** This allows free-to-play players to compete evenly against "whales" who have maxed-out accounts, as long as they have the skill to pilot their team.

### 3. Entry Costs

* **Free Entry:** Most challenges give you one Free Entry when they first start.
* **Re-Entry:** If you lose 3 times and get knocked out, you can pay Power Crystals (or sometimes special Challenge Tokens) to enter again and try for a better streak.

### 4. Grid Tokens & The Challenge Shop

Winning Challenge matches often rewards you with a special currency called [Grid Tokens](/prlw/challenges-patrols-missions/grid-tokens.md).

* **Seasonal:** [Grid Tokens](/prlw/challenges-patrols-missions/grid-tokens.md) are part of a seasonal cycle. You collect them by playing challenges over several weeks.
* **The Shop:** You can spend these tokens in a special "Challenge Shop" tab to buy specific Leader/Assist shards, Essence, or coins.
* **Reset:** Be careful—[Grid Tokens](/prlw/challenges-patrols-missions/grid-tokens.md) typically expire or convert to coins at the end of the Challenge Season, so you should spend them before the season ends.

### 5. Types of Challenges

* **Score Attack:** Standard rules. Just win as many games as possible with any team.
* **Draft Battles: Y**ou don't use your own roster. The game gives you a random selection of characters, and you must build a team from that limited pool.
* **Themed Events:** Strict roster limits, such as "Villains Only," "Power Rangers Zeo Characters Only," or "Female Leaders Only."

### 6. What are Challenge Seasons?

Challenge Seasons last for approximately 3 weeks where you gain Grid Tokens for participating in and winning in specified Challenges.

Grid Tokens earned during the season can then be used to purchase items such as Shards, Megazord parts, etc. The higher tier you reach the more options you get in the Grid Token Store / Challenge Shop.
